EUROfusion and ASIPP have officially released the first joint Research Plan for the high-field BEST tokamak in Hefei, China 🌏⚡ This milestone marks the start of a structured, forward-looking collaboration to explore burning-plasma physics at Q > 5, support advanced DT operations, and prepare technologies essential for ITER and future pilot fusion power plants. 🔬 Meet one of our German Member: the Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik (IPP) – one of Europe’s largest fusion research centres with campuses in Garching and Greifswald. At the Greifswald branch, IPP employs around 400 staff and hosts the largest stellarator device on the planet, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) – built to test whether the stellarator concept can deliver continuous, reactor-relevant plasma operation. W7-X uses 50 non-planar superconducting magnet coils, enabling steady plasma discharges (up to 30 minutes), and aims to achieve plasma confinement comparable to a tokamak — without the disadvantage of large plasma currents. Research at IPP spans stellarator heating & optimisation, dynamics & transport, edge & divertor physics, as well as theory. This work supports EUROfusion’s mission to develop fusion as a clean, safe and virtually unlimited energy source.
