This week, the 33rd European Fusion Programme Workshop (EFPW) is bringing together experts from across Europe to focus on one of fusion’s toughest challenges: heat and particle exhaust. Researchers and engineers are discussing how to manage extreme heat and particle loads in future fusion power plants – from plasma-wall interactions to advanced divertor concepts and materials. As EUROfusion Programme Manager Gianfranco Federici notes: “I look forward to participating to this important Workshop on Heat and Particle Exhaust that play a pivotal role in the design and operation of fusion power plants…” And Prof.Dr. Elisabeth Wolfrum from Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics adds: “Power and particle exhaust is one of the key challenges on the path to fusion energy. 📘 Capturing ITER’s engineering journey Several chapters of the first volume of the ITER Engineering Basis Handbook are now available – an important milestone in preserving the engineering memory of the world’s largest international fusion experiment in Cadarache, South of France. Under the editorial lead of EUROfusion Programme Manager Gianfranco Federici and his Team, the handbook brings together ITER’s design principles, the underlying technical design basis and how they evolved from conception to construction over nearly four decades. 🔍 What makes this handbook special? 🇨🇭 Welcome to the Swiss Plasma Center at EPFL – Switzerland’s home for fusion energy research. At EPFL’s Swiss Plasma Center (SPC), researchers, engineers and students work together to understand plasmas and bring fusion energy closer to reality. SPC hosts TCV, the Tokamak à Configuration Variable – one of only four major fusion research facilities in Europe. 2025 was a big year for fusion in Europe 🌍☀️ EUROfusion and ITER signed a new high-level cooperation agreement, Wendelstein 7-X and WEST set impressive plasma records, young scientists received 23 new EUROfusion Engineering and Bernard Bigot Researcher Grants, and partners launched a joint research plan for the BEST tokamak in China.
