Once a fusion reactor starts running, its interior becomes radioactive, ruling out human access for maintenance. Since every component will eventually need replacing, engineers must find ways to carry out that work remotely, from a safe distance. That's harder than it sounds. Some reactor components weigh up to 180 tonnes and have to be manoeuvred through narrow maintenance ports. To work through this, EUROfusion is working with a new robotics testing centre of the University of Southern Denmark. The site will soon include the world's strongest robotic arm, built to develop and test a new approach to handling these components for future fusion power plants. Europe advances stellarator fusion research with the launch of Project WISER 🔬🇪🇺 Spain has just launched Project WISER (WInd-tunnel for a StEllarator Reactor), a new fusion initiative supported by a public-private investment of approximately €500 million. The project includes both the construction of the WISER stellarator and the development of enabling technologies required for future fusion reactors. Building on decades of European stellarator research, including Germany’s Wendelstein 7-X and Spain’s TJ-II, WISER represents a further step in strengthening Europe’s leadership in optimized stellarator research and future reactor development. A new diagnostic system has arrived at JT-60SA in Naka, Japan 🇯🇵 The Divertor Vacuum Ultra Violet spectrometer will help researchers monitor plasma impurities and study the divertor — the region where hot plasma meets the surrounding structures. The system is the result of a multi-year European collaboration, with contributions from Forschungszentrum Jülich, ICSI Romania, IPPLM Poland, Consorzio RFX, and ENEA Frascati. After final assembly and acceptance testing in Italy, installation is now underway at JT-60SA. The diagnostic is expected to see its first plasma light during operation phase 2.
