JOREK, the code that simulates key plasma instabilities in fusion devices, is now open source 🔓 For more than 20 years, JOREK has helped researchers model disruptions, plasma edge stability, and mitigation strategies for magnetically confined fusion plasmas. People from all over the world work on JOREK: from multiple countries in Europe to China, Japan, India, and the US. “We have really become a growing and powerful community that has made a difference,” says Matthias Hoelzl. We are glad to share that EUROfusion joined the JT-60SA Onsite Laboratory. The laboratory is a programme where early-career researchers reside at the Naka Fusion Institute, working hands-on with JT-60SA, the world's largest tokamak. Until now this has mainly involved Japanese universities, but with this expansion, European universities and research institutes are joining in too 🌍 This will strengthen the existing collaboration between the EUROfusion Consortium and QST – the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology, in Japan – facilitating student participation in the JT-60SA experiment. Researchers use a statistical method to help interpret limited sensor data from fusion experiments and detect anomalies in plasma control systems. Two Belgian companies, PropheSea and Ikologik, saw that the same approach could work anywhere data is scarce but decisions still need to be made. Together they applied it to Ecofrost, a frozen fried potato producer. The result: meaningful savings in water and electricity use, and a working example of how methods built for fusion science can transfer into industry. Preparations for the next #JT60SA experimental campaign are gaining momentum. ⚛️ At the 3rd JT-60SA Experiment Team Workshop at QST Naka, around 50 European and Japanese experts came together to advance the tools, software and experimental preparations needed for the next operational phase. The workshop brought together 20 European participants from EUROfusion laboratories, universities and Fusion for Energy, strengthening the close collaboration between European and Japanese teams. “It is very rewarding to see European and Japanese colleagues working together as one team,” said Yevgen Kazakov, EU Experiment Leader. The next workshop is planned for 5–9 October 2026.
